This is the pant that started it all. Now, we’ve improved its fit and quality, resulting in a high performance, yet understated jean that does it all.
SOFT-SHELL | FABRIC FEATURES & CARE
Schoeller soft-shell combines a tough, abrasion-resistant exterior with a soft brushed interior, making our pants extremely durable yet comfortable enough to wear all day. The fabric also moves when you do, stretching in all four directions. Unlike most performance pants, the fabric feels substantial, like denim, and features a reinforced, no-stretch waistband.
Schoeller soft-shell features outstanding wicking, breathability, and weather resistance, keeping you cool during intense activities and protecting you from the elements. It also dries quickly and will insulate even when wet. Schoeller fabrics are manufactured according to the Bluesign system, for sustainable textile production.
Protected with NanoSphere
NanoSphere is a durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment inspired by the water-and-dirt-resistant properties of lotus leaves, which prevent dirt from adhering to their surface. Fabric fibers are coated with nano-particles, which form a three-dimensional surface that repels water, grease, dirt, and stains. Liquids roll off the surface as easily as they do off a lotus leaf.

Walk it. Ride it. Get on the next jet to nowhere and you’re ready with this Portland designed-and-sewn pant. Active Junky plowed in to life, powered by Schoeller Dryskin soft-shell fabric with integrated NanoSphere treatment. Even without a Nobel Prize, you’ll turn the mysteries of the sub-molecular cosmos into a great fitting, nearly-armored pair that tips the scales at only about a pound. Testers loved the unhemmed approach to getting started with a waistband that’s more for via ferrata than franks and tatter tots. Fit trim with straight legs and a stealth right rear pocket, Thunderbolt Original Jeans still allow four-way stretch to escape with your anatomy feeling good and your style more than intact. Other than a pair of boardshorts, this product caps off your quick-escape packing list even if nasty weather is anticipated. Call it on the money. And on the mark.
Another six months have passed since my original 6 Month Review of the Thunderbolt Jeans so I thought I’d drop in with a quick follow-up. They’re still going strong. I still wear these almost every day and they still perform and look as good as ever. Being so impressed with the first six months I’ve been more tough on them over the winter months. I’ve played with my son in the snow, sledding, snowblowed the driveway after storms (so much better doing this than in my old denim jeans!), did yard work, tore down an old swing set and helped friends move. I’m at the point now that I don’t consciously think about whether I’m being too hard on them and they always come away looking no worse for wear.
These premium outdoor pants have proven themselves this winter; they are comfortable, breathable and very wind resistant. They also perform well when wet. As they stand up to a Scottish and Welsh winter, they will serve you well anywhere in the world you choose to use them.
The Mark II Jean has been my go-to for well over a year. I have been wearing the softshell jean mostly in my urban/domestic/professional life. They shine whether riding a bike on a rainy day to a meeting, meeting with clients, or dressing up for Thanksgiving dinner. This past winter, I pushed the jeans further. They served as my lounge gear in the yurt after a day of soul shredding with my friends in the Wallowa Mountains. I used them in a skimo race. I also have used them this spring on Mt. Hood, summiting twice and circumnavigating the upper mountain. Regardless of application, I can count on solid performance and lots of compliments.
